Do You Believe In Astrology?
By P. Paulraj
Astrology originated when man's knowledge of astronomy and the universe was presumably wrong. Hence astrological calculations were arrived on wrong basis.
The nine planets calculation has a problem of its own, since only five of them are real planets. Out of the remaining four, one is a star and the other a satellite. The other two planets, do not exist at all! How can you derive conclusions on the basis of wrong data?
Astrological charts are prepared according to the relative visual positions of the so called planets in the twelve zodiacal constellations at the time of birth of a person. As the solar planets and the zodiacal stars are millions of miles away from the earth, their visual positions at any moment are only virtual and not real. In preparing the chart for a person, astrologers make use of wrong virtual positions of the planets. If they have the knowledge and ability to calculate and find the real positions of the planets through astronomical calculations perhaps astrologers themselves will lose faith in their cult.
Though most of the people who believe in astrology are illiterate, it is observed that educated people the world over have started asking each other what sign they were born under? Astrological literature is flourishing as never before. Many scientists and investigators are quietly gathering astrological data and testing them in various fields.
Since light from planets and stars takes several minutes to millions of years to reach earth, it is clear that astrologers' charts are wrong by several minutes to millions of years.
Ask people why they believe what an astrologist, fortune-teller or a palmist predicts, they invariably say that this has existed from ancient times and that even scientists believe in it.
Man, but why do you believe? Believing in astrology on the ground that Newton and Carl Jung believed is as absurd as drinking urine as a curative medicine on the ground that a prime minister of a country did so.
One cannot accept blindly all that Bill Clinton, George Bush or Albert Einstein said or followed. History has lot more examples of beliefs of famous thinkers, philosophers and scientists proving to be wrong and absurd in due course of time. False concept will never become right just because the majority of people believe it or because it is believed from ancient times or because there are eminent scientists among the believers. He who is prepared to believe without verification is not wise.
The story is told of ten virgins who went to an astrologer one by one and asked him to predict whether she would have a boy or girl after marriage. The fortune-teller told each of them individually that she would have a boy after marriage. All of them left for different places and got married subsequently. Four of them had boys. All the four started believing that the astrologer was perfectly right and started believing in astrology and followed him as a 'guru.'
Not long ago, the press reported two instances in an Indian state where couples killed their only sons and offered them to their gods on the advice of their astrologers who predicted solutions for their problems and the government later called them 'quacks' and sent them to prison.
Classification of horoscope is based on twelve signs. How ridiculous to believe that 525 million people of the world out of a population of over 6.3 billion have just the same things happening in their lives ever since they were born. How absurd to believe that 88 million people of India out of a population of over 1.056 billion have just the same things happening in their lives ever since they were born. Have you ever come across just one person in your neighborhood or acquaintances sharing the same happenings in his life as of yours?
Here is an amazing truth. Astrologers and palmists cannot make better predictions than a layman like you and I who can only guess! When you are experiencing suffering and pain you tend to believe in Astrologers who take advantage of your situation, connect cosmic forces and movements of planets and treat your feelings of helplessness and meaninglessness. Astrology does not have a scientific basis at all.
Anything can happen to any one at any age or any time. You do not know and you do not have control over it. Out of the same clay, a potter can make a flower vase or a vessel meant for wash rooms. The vessel in the wash room can not question the potter as to why it was not made to be a flower vase.
You can not fore-tell or have control over your future. Bandaranaike, the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka postponed his oath taking ceremony by 30 minutes at the instance of his family astrologer to an 'auspicious' time but was assassinated before he completed his term. Yet, lots of politicians who aspire thrones take their oaths only at 'auspicious' times fixed by their so called astrologers.
Those who have insecurity and fear of future and those who use short methods to achieve their goals tend to believe the so called astrologers. It is possible that you are convinced of the myth of this ancient cult and still do not venture to shun this belief because of the fear of future and people around you. People aren't going to change their beliefs because of you, so why should you?
The Word of God teaches us to keep away from astrology and other such activities. In the book of Deuteronomy God warns us as such:
"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times (ASTROLOGY), or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God." Deuteronomy 18:10-13
Get out of your shell and proclaim what you believe or disbelieve boldly.
