Is it ok for a Christian to smoke?
Though the scriptures do not say anything specifically about smoking cigarettes, it sure tells us in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and we should do all we can to glorify God in our body (v. 20).
Since our body is His temple, we should make every effort to take care of it, out of respect for the God who created it.
Cigarette smoking is dangerous since it damages not only your body, but also harms all those who come in contact with the 'secondhand smoke'.
In U.S. more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined ( www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/wk/mm5114.pdf).
As the saying goes, "though smoking will not keep you out of heaven, it sure will get you there much quicker."
There are many resources available if you really have a desire to quit (www.settingcaptivesfree.com ). With all addictions, the majority of the battle is between one's ears.
