"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" 2 Timothy 4:2

I'm a Christian and struggling with an addiction. What should I do?
If you are already saved and still struggling with an addiction, welcome to the
church of the 'walking wounded.' All of us wrestle with some besetting sin.
Even Paul expressed his struggles with his sin nature in Romans 7:18-19, "I know
that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the
desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the
good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing."
If you have an addiction, pray that God will show you how to be delivered.
There are numerous resources out there, which God may lead you to in order to get
help with your addiction. If you are honestly seeking God's will for your life,
He will deal with your addiction in His timing.
However, if you continue on in your addiction without making any efforts to deal
with the issue, it will hurt the intimacy of your relationship with God. I have
met too many people who outright refuse to deal with an addiction arguing they
are saved by grace and not by works.
This is true, but God in His word commands us to live righteously to bring glory
to Him. The Bible says that we should become "new creatures" if we are in
Christ. James 2:19 says, "You believe that there is one God. Good!
Even the demons believe that and shudder." Basically, if you have "head
knowledge" regarding salvation but do not live what you believe you are no
better off than the demons of hell.
God sometimes allows us
to struggle with these issues to teach us to rely on Him and His grace.
Scripture conveys this concept in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, "To keep me from
becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was
given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I
pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is
sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will
boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest
on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in
hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am
strong."
